Arete Crete |
|
Arete is located approximately 3 kms from “Hill 107” where The Battle of Crete was won and lost. During World War 2, on the 20th of May 1941, the Germans launched the first ever invasion by air. There mission, to capture the island of Crete. Though successful “Operation Mercury” as it was known, was a hard fought battle resulting in heavy losses on all sides. During this period every year, the Battle of Crete memorial week occurs, when hundreds of people arrive on the island, including war veterans, to remember the fallen. Several memorial ceremonies are held across the west of Crete, including the German War Cemetery in Maleme, 30 and 33 Sqn RAF memorial at Maleme and the village of Galatas . Concluding with the biggest ceremony, on the Sunday, at the Allied War Cemetery in Souda, pictured above. We are always in attendance at these ceremonies and have, over the last few years, made many friends amongst the veterans who stay locally. We would be happy to provide a full itinerary of events scheduled for the Battle of Crete week as and when they are announced. At any time of the year, we can provide a free guided tour of the local battlefield sites tailored to your personal specifications. Please contact us for further details.
